William Strang RA, RE, P.I.S. 1859-1921
Painter, etcher and engraver of portraits and figure subjects. Born in Dumbarton in 1859, he moved to London in 1875 and studied under Legros at the Slade School. Elected R. E. in 1881.
Produced some 750 etchings, drypoints, line engravings, mezzotints, aquatints and woodcuts. In 1889 he was awarded a silver medal for etching at the Paris International Exhibition. He later turned to painting, mostly oils but some watercolours. In 1897 he was awarded a first-class gold medal for painting at the Dresden International Exhibition. Exhibited at the R A from 1883 and was elected R A in 1921.
