A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa

£1,500.00

Product description

A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa - F.C. Selous

Richard Bentley & Son. 3rd edition 1893. 455pp.

Green buckram boards with black edging and three gilt antelope heads. Edges all show shelf wear and the spine is becoming slightly frayed. Inner hinge is starting to crack but otherwise all bindings remain very good and tight. The book is slightly cocked as a result of said spine defects. Some foxing to plate protectors.

Rough cut page edges. Tissue protected frontispiece illustration of a violent encounter with an elephant.

A narrative of nine years spent amongst the game of the far interior of south Africa with nineteen full page illustrations.
There is a large fold out map describing the rivers and basic features "illustrating the travels of the author" that is intact but has a two inch tear.

The book is dedicated: "To my friends the elephant hunters, missionaries and traders in the far interior of south Africa from whom I have ever met with truest kindness and the most generous hospitality, this work is respectfully dedicated by the author".

The appendix lists the many individual game animals shot by Selous and on p433 there is an engraving of the rifle he used to do it.
Real colonial stuff.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
