Advice to the Officers of the British Army with the Addition of Some Hints to the Drummer and Private Soldier

£6.99

Product description

Bernard Fergusson, introduction, and drawings in colour and line by Frank Wilson
Jonathan Cape, 1946,
Hardback; 130 x 205 mm; red boards with gold titles on spine and front cover; 96 pages. No dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound. The spine is faded with some black marks, and bumping to the top and bottom of the spine. There is some fading to the top of the covers. The front paste-down endpaper has two marks, one of which has dented the opposite front free endpaper. There are very, very minor marks on some of the pages commensurate with the age of the book and the quality of the paper available just after World War II. The back free endpaper has a dog-ear.
The book was first published in 1782 and its title continued “with the addition of some hints to the drummer and private soldier”. The advice, intended to be humorous, in 18 chapters covers all ranks from Commanders-in-Chief, who should never expose themselves to danger when lower ranks are available, down to the private soldier who should consider all his officers as his natural enemies. The illustrations by Frank Wilson are as charming as the humour of the text, of its period in the late 18th century.
