A Scotsman who had run a plantation in India, returned home and did much experimental work Clifton Park in Roxborough. There he developed a system which "prior to the widespread availability and adoption of man-made fertilizer, he advocated building up the organic content of soil by planting a mixture of grasses and other plants, particularly deep-rooted plants such as chicory. Modern organic growers still find Elliot's work applicable today."
This is the third edition of his book "with the most recent experiments up to the end of October 1904". There were further editions up until 1943.

Rutherford hardback with no DJ. Green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering tot front and spine. End pages tanned. Portrait of the author opposite the title page. Fold out map of the Clifton on Bowmont farm at the end and in good condition. No marks and good binding.
