Black's Domestic Dictionary

£19.99

Product description

A fascinating remnant of its time. The advertisements show happy domestic servants polishing and stoking the fire. The Preface tells us that the book is designed to supply you with "the practical knowledge necessary for the business of running a house ... so that your house is home in the best sense of the word".. It seems to cover everything, from foods and clothing, millinery, floor coverings, cleaning utensils, food preserving, legal matters and licences - the list goes on for ever. The penultimate entry is Wines and finishes with the memorable observation "never unduly press people to take wine, for to some folk it is as objectionable as nasty-tasting medicine. Fortunately, or unfortunately, most people require no pressing". An echo of a Rothschild dinner party?

Hardback with no DJ. The boards are bleached and worn and the spine markedly bleached. The front hinge externally is split at its upper 4 cm and is sprung but still functional internally. The text is interspersed with advertisements. Tanning of end papers. No marks.

This would seem to be a Mrs Beeton for a later generation.
