Publisher: Holden & Hardingham Ltd, Adelphi, London, 1920. First cheap edition. Hardback, 248 pages + 4 pages of publisher's adverts showing other titles by W Hope Hodgson. No dustjacket. Cover, in red boards with black titling to spine, is in fair to good condition commensurate with age, a little bumping to top and bottom of spine and a couple of scuff marks on spine as per photos. Book itself is in good condition commensurate with age with firm binding, clear text and no tears or creases apart from a tear on page 199. Some light tanning throughout with some foxing in places and a small inscription on rear endpaper. Binding beginning to separate at page 225 with some exposure of the webbing but page still tightly held and secure. Overall a very decent copy of this very scarce early hardback edition of a major classic of supernatural fiction featuring Carnacki who was to ghost finding what Sherlock Holmes was to the world of murder and mystery! Features such classic supernatural 'cases' as 'The whistling room', 'The Thing Invisible' , 'The Gateway of the Monster' and 'The Horse of the Invisible', all of which are genuinely hair-raising stories!
