The author, Anne Jane Cupples, née Douglas (1839 – 1896) was a Scottish writer and populariser of science. She was married to the dog-breeder and writer George Cupples. She wrote around fifty books in total, mostly intended for children, under the name Mrs George Cupples. This title was her fourth published work, originally published in 1869.

In generally good condition, some rubbing wear, bumping and marks to board covers. 1882 prize award inscription on inside cover. Tabniing to end papers. Some foxing.
