An opportunity to purchase a rare original copy of this limited edition book, printed and published in 1887, containing poems and writings dedicated to the Cavaliers, the Royalists who supported the English King Charles 1st and the monarchy, and fought against the Parliamentarians, or 'Roundheads', in the English Civil War (1642 - 1651). The softback covers, which have envelope-style flaps, are tanned and lightly dust soiled and the front and rear lower edges have some light water-stains; the edges and spine have light rubbing wear, with small chips to spine ends; the uncut text block edges are dust-darkened; inside pages have occasional foxing spots. The block is still tightly bound. The rear free end paper has a neat pencil note by a former owner. On the page preceding the half title is printed: "The Issue of this Editio princeps of 'Cavalier Lyrics' is strictly limited to One Hundred and Twenty-five copies for England, and Twenty-five for America (except a few special Presentation-copies for the Press, and private gifts). All printed on Dutch hand-made paper, unbound and uncut, rough edges. The One Hundred and Fifty copies are numbered and signed in M.S., this copy being No. 109." Signed by J W Bosworth and dated November, 1886. On the first free end paper is a touching, handwritten dedication signed by the author - 'To My own Dear Margaret, for nearly a quarter-century the best possible "Lady, my Lady" of Molash, and my dear wife of twenty-nine years. I present this book on "Royal Oak Day" as befitting a loyal Cavalier, the Twenty-Ninth of May 1895, Anniversary of our Wedding Day at Goodmanham, and beginning our thirtieth year of happy wedlock, with loving wishes, Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth.'
