Three volume 'Correspondence of Charles, First Marquis Cornwallis'. Second edition, published in 1859 by John Murray, edited with notes by Charles Derek Ross, Esq. Handwritten note from 1866 on inside cover (as pictured). A highly influential colonial governor and British army officer, Cornwallis (1738-1805) is best remembered for his role on the losing side in the American War of Independence. The volumes contain official dispatches and personal letters written by Cornwallis during his career, with vivid descriptions of the historical and political context of the events in which Cornwallis participated, illustrating his character and personal motivations.

Outer covers in poor condition, with spines unattached, as shown in photographs. Books ideally require rebinding.
