About this item

5.525x8.5"sq. - hardback - on thin vegetable paper - unidentified font - printed by Jarrold & Sons Ltd. for Cassell and Company, Publishers - the copy is in good condition, the spine and binding loose but not broken, the covers worn along the bottom edge and discoloured slightly with water damage, the edges of the pages spotted quite badly but intact

Published with a frontispiece and 21 maps - apologising for having written the account of a campaign he took part in, the Field-Marshall then explains that he has done so in order to tell, "as honestly as he could," "of the problems he faced, why he took the decisions he did, what helped, what hindered, the luck he had, and the mistakes he made." and gives us "a personal narrative, written from the standpoint of a corps or army commander in the field, whose outlook was often limited by his own surroundings."

This is a sou7rce book for historians of that war and also historians of that social period, whose structure has gone.
