In search of the picturesque, of consolation, of a wife. Comic poem by William Combe, satirising William Gilpin, late 18th century clergyman who is best known as one of the originators of the idea of the picturesque. Used hardback in fair condition. With colour illustrations. Publishing date unknown but assumed to be late 19th century. Boards originally blue, but largely faded to brown, particularly on the spine. Bumped at corners, worn at head and tail of spine. Title label on spine largely illegible and considerably worn. Edges of text block dusty and spotted. Cracks appearing between the boards and the text block, internally, but the book is still intact. Previous owner's name and date on front free endpaper. Light spotting throughout, but otherwise clean internally. Text block is firm. 376 pages, plus 7 pages of publisher's listings.
