Epping Forest: The Speech of the City Solicitor

£50.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Full title: Epping Forest: The Speech of the City Solicitor(Mr TJ Nelson) for the Corporation of London before the Epping Forest Commissioners at the Guildhall Westminster on 14th, 15th and 21st November 1876, together with a Map of the Forest showing the Unlawful Enclosures

Waterlow and Sons Ltd, London, 1876, cloth backed boards, [vi] + 94 pp + fold out map.

Thomas Nelson was appointed City Solicitor in 1862 at a time when litigation concerning the ownership of Epping Forest began. The Crown had been selling off forest rights to bring in income leading to the enclosure of the Forest and depriving commoners of their rights. It was largely due to Nelson's knowledge that the City Corporation was able to acquire the Forest for the benefit of the public in 1876. This document sets out his speech before the Forest Commissioners.

Cloth backed boards with large folding map of Epping Forest compiled by William D'Oyley. Good condition. Some soiling and toning to card covers with slight creasing and damage to the lower corner of the front cover (see photo). Internally there is foxing to the prelims and final 2 pages and partial tanning to the title page (around map) but otherwise pages are remarkably clean. Slight weakening to front hinge. The large fold out map is in good condition, very clean but with one large tear across the upper left panel which has been poorly repaired with gummed paper on the front of the map.
