If I Were You ...

Product description

Rare First English translation published in 1950 by Eyre & Spottiswoode. Translated by J F McEwen.

A story of a man on whom is conferred the power to make the actual transition implied in the title. The scene is an industrial town in north-east France, the time, the nineteen-twenties, the man to whom this terrifying gift is given is Fabian Especel, a young clerk in rebellion against the restraints of his pious upbringing and the constriction of his poverty. The book is written as a fantastic adventure story rather than as an allegory, it deals with the double anguish which consists in the knowledge that a man can neither escape his own destiny nor the approach of death and the bewilderment of finding himself alone in the midst of an incomprehensible universe.

In very good condition. The unclipped dust jacket has some light wear but is well protected in a detachable plastic cover. Board cover is bright and clean. Pages are clean, some dust on top edge and a couple of small stains on bottom cut edge of pages (see photo 4). Binding sound.
