The content of four lectures delivered by the Professor at the Royal Institution in the early months of 1870.. The book was initially publihsed in 1873 and was, the author tells us, translated into other languages and "become the subject of friendly and unfriendly remarks in several works on Compapartive Theology". He was moved, therefore, to republish the book with the inclusion of some material omitted because of space restrictions in the earlier book and with additional "corrections and supplementary notes".

Longmans Green hardback with no DJ. Maroon cloth covered boards with some wear to the top and bottom of the spine cover and to the outside of the rear hinge. The binding remains firm, however. There are a few vertical lines against some paragraphs of the first essay but no other marks.
