£24.99

Product description

Biography of Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815 - 1891), a French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon , his armies and military themes. Very large heavy illustrated book - the title says it all. Translated from French.

Maroon cloth covered boards with fine ribbed texture and gilt text and illustration, the spine has a similar style. corners curled and some wear to edges. The sheer weight of the book has distorted the binding which is intact; only the front plate (containing a portrait of the subject) which is on particularly heavy and inflexible paper, has come adrift; the protective tissue is still attached. Gift dedication dated 1901 on second page. For its age this book is assessed as being in reasonably good condition.
