Memoirs of John Evelyn

£200.00

Product description

The book’s full title: “Memoirs of John Evelyn, ESQ. FRS. Author of the 'Sylva' &c. &c. Comprising His Diary, from 1641 to 1705-6, And a Selection of His Familiar Letters to which is Subjoined the Private Correspondence Between King Charles I and Sir Edward Nicholas; Also Between Sir Edward Hyde, Afterwards earl of Clarendon, and Sir Richard Browne, Ambassador to the Court of France, in the time of king Charles I. and the Usurpation.”
This is an 1827 full–leather five-volume edition of the diary of John Evelyn, which can be compared with that of Samuel Pepys in that it provides an important record of the history and customs of the time. This edition was printed and edited by William Bray. These volumes have painted edges and raised bands on the spines, and these in turn are decorated with gilt markings. The titles and volume numbers are written in gilt lettering on the spines as well. All five volumes have frontispieces and several folding plates. The front and rear end-papers of the books are decorated with various patterns. Condition: the books are all in a similar condition. They all have some age-related wear and tear including marking and denting on the covers and interior pages. All volumes have some interior foxing, but this is fairly mild. Only the fourth book has a missing title label on the spine. The bindings are generally strong but there are a few places where they have become slightly weak. This weakness is mild and should not prevent the books from being readable. Overall, these volumes are in good condition for their age.
