Pesonal Narrative of a Journey through Central Arabia

£115.00

Product description

This was an enormously popular account of the travels Gifford undertook in Arabia at a time when that area was little known. He was, at that time, a Jesuit priest, but far from prosetylysing, he and a single servant, posed as a Syrian physician. He was, in effect, a spy for the Society of Jesus. After returning to Europe he wrote this book, and then left the Catholic church ending his days in the British Foreign service.
This is a handsome book bound in full leather with five bands to the spine cover, a delicate gilt pattern on the spine cover and gilt line around both front and back boards. The end papers and the edges of the text block are marbled. The binding is firm and there are no marks. There is one fold-out map which is partially coloured and which has a small tear at its point of attachment. Either because of this tear of because it has been ill-folded, the map protruded from the lower and front edges of the text block and has become a bit worn. There are also four fold our plans, all of which are present and in good condition. Book plate inside ffep. Two small stains on the title page. The date give in 1873 which probably makes this part of the seventh edition but no edition is given
In really nice condition.
