Pillsbury's Chess Career

£125.00

Product description

The name of Pillsbury does not, perhaps, resonate in the mind of the general public like his contemporaries like Lasker and Steinitz but he had a meteoric rise to fame, winning the Hastings tournament in 1885 and gaining a number of other notable scalps before his early death at 32 with his closing years being clouded by the ravages of syphilis.. He possessed a phenomenal memory and the capacity for simultaneous and blindfold games. Two authors started to write a life of this master, found that their work was covering the same ground and decided to join forces. This book is the outcome.
Here are some 233 games with annotations and illustrations. Clearly the book has been a treasured possession of a chess affictionado: the majority of games have one or more alteration - a move, an opponent, a gambit. Unfortunately the alterations have been make in biro which makes it a bit difficult to discern what the original text said..
Printing Craft London and The American Chess Bulletin hardback with no DJ. Maroon cloth covered boards. with moderately bleached spine. The rear hinge is badly worn posteriorly but is functional. Moderate edge and corner wear to the boards. Black and white frontispiece of Pillsbury with transparent cover. The hinge between the preface and the biography is sprung. Errata slip inserted on the top of the Biography page. The top edge of the text block is trimmed but the other two edges are rough cut. Undated .
Inserted at the back of the book is a small pamphlet produced in 1937 by W H Watts. This gives details of seven additional games and then gives a huge list of errata in the parent volume. Some of these - but not all - are reflected in the annotations.
