Poems on several occasions

£450.00

Product description

Poems on several occasions. The First Volume (of two volumes). London: printed for the author and sold by L. Gilliver, 1729. 16 pp prelims, 384 pp of text with fine engraved head and tail-pieces to the poems. Large octavo in contemporary calf, with spines and covers rubbed and the joints cracked but front cover separated from spine. Original spine label lost but gilt decoration retained, albeit faintly. Some dirt and light staining to the pages, as would be expected in a book of this age but no foxing or significant damage. The 12-page list of subscribers includes Congreve, Pope, Samuel Richardson, Swift, Dr. Arbuthnot and Laurence Eusden, Poet Laureate. This is Joseph Mitchell`s principal collection of verse. Though the son of a Scottish stonemason he developed a facility for literature and settled in London, where he earned himself the title of "Sir Robert Walpole`s Poet". Notoriously improvident, he was constantly in need of financial support; Aaron Hill gave him assistance, but Colley Cibber called him "vicious and Dishonest" and "governed by every irregular appetite".
