Recollections of Forty Years

£224.99

Product description

1st edition (of which there are very few available) published in 1910 by John Ouseley Ltd, Recollections of Forty Years is an "Account at First Hand of some Famous Criminal Lunacy Cases, English and American; together with Facsimile Letters, Notes, and other Data concerning them. "

The son of Forbes Benignus Winslow, expert on insanity and the law and operator of a number of private madhouses, Winslow took over the running of his father's asylums on his death. He later turned his attention to the solving of crimes "by Sherlock Holmesian methods." His persistence in putting forward G. Wentworth Smith, a Canadian, as a suspect for Jack the Ripper, led to police briefly suspecting him for the murders. He was the author of a number of works on insanity including the Handbook For Attendants on The Insane.

This wonderful book comes from the library of H.M. Hyndman (founder of the Nationalist Socialist Party) and it was given to him by Forbes Winslow himself. A handwritten message is on the front end paper. The book even has a small slip of paper included which appears to be an appointment card hand written by Forbes Winslow.

The book is octavo with original plum cloth, title gilt to the spine and the upper board. The book has a portrait frontispiece and numerous illustrations to the text. The book is a little rubbed, corners bumped and endpapers foxed and browned. Page edges are roughly cut.

A fantastic gem of a book that is highly collectible
