Reminiscences of a Retired Physician

£35.00

Product description

A little book in the Routledge Shilling Railway Volumes series. It is a biography of an American from a relatively poor New Hampshire family who managed to obtain an education and get into Harvard to study as a doctor. He struggled to make good but succeeded and this little book is an account of his various triumphs and disasters. Dates are scanty but one entry is dated as 1840 so he was clearly in practice in the middle years of the nineteenth century.

Routledge hardback with no DJ. Marbled paper to the boards with cloth binding of the spine. The edges and corners of the boards are severely worn. There is a little wear of the top and bottom of the spine cover. There is a 3 cm superficial split of the outside of the front hinge. Some pencil scrawling on the reverse of the front board. The text binding is somewhat suspect with p 15/16 being partly detached: p 17/18 having a stellate tear in the centre of the page (but with the text remaining legible) and pages 219 to the end at 222 being completely detached. There is a crescent missing at p 91/2. Despite all this the majority of the text block is in good condition. There is a little generalised tanning.

A New England memoire and professional account of medicine in the nineteenth century.
