Romeo and Juliet with designs by Oliver Messel

£295.00

Product description

"The Illustrations to this edition of Romeo and Juliet are reproduced from the original designs for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film production made in Hollywood in 1936 by Irving Thalberg, starring Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard under the direction of George Cukor." It consists of the text interspersed with many black and white reproductions of design drawings and seven tipped in colour plates. The dedication - to Norma Shearer - is signed by Oliver Messel (although this could be a facsimile). The list of those lending their drawings for reproduction in this book is distinguished indeed (The Duke of Kent, The Lady Ancaster, Mrs Anthony de Rothschild, John Gielgud et al).
Batsford hardback. The DJ is present but in two separate plarts, separated at the front hinge cover. The external surfaces of the DJ are tanned and the edges worn. There is a 4 cm vertical tear over the upper part of the rear hinge and the adjacent cover iscreased.. In sharp distinction the underlying boards in purple cloth with white and coloured patterning are just about pristine. There is a dedication on the ffep in ink dated 1947. No other marks.
A splendid volume in very good conditon
