Scripture Animals

£39.99

Product description

Sub title "and the lessons taught by them". In the preface it states that these are sermons of the Rev Dr Newton "which were found in his study at Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, after his death, and which are here published by his own dying request". He goes through a veritable menagerie of animals, in each case highlighting that species utilisation in the Bible, with many local American illustrations.

Nisbet hard back with no DJ. No date of publication but a leaf has been (neatly) excised immediately before the preface. The preface itself is dated 1888. Red cloth covered boards with a camel on the front and gilt lettering; black design and gilt lettering to spine cover. The board edges are bevelled. There is a little corner and edge wear and wear also to the top and bottom of the spine cover. Frontispiece. Owner's name on reverse of front cover. The title page has some red lettering on it. The first fold containing the contents and the first four pages of the first chapter are only very tenuously attached to the rest of the block and their edges are frayed. The remainder of the text block is in good condition with no marks and firm binding. Gilt edging all round

This is a rare little book, unfortunately here not in the best of conditions and the price reflects this. Even the print-on-demand copies are quite expensive so the genuine article has to be valuable.
