Seconde Guerre Punique, Poeme de Silius Italicus. Vol 2

£60.00

Product description

Published in Paris by Jean Baptiste Lefebvre de Villebrune (a French philologist) in 1781. pp219 (page numbering refers to verso and recto, thus pp438).

Strong untitled tan leather covers with beautifully marbled front and rear boards with inexpertly applied tooling to borders! Very elegant spine with five raised bands and beautiful gilt decoration. Leather title plate in red (faded to deep maroon) and a second plate below faded to brown: "tome 11". Red page edges

Swirling painted watercolour design to front and rear paste downs. Title page "Silius Italicus, tome Second" and second title page:
Seconde Guerre Punique, Poeme de Silius Italicus . . . Tome Second. a Paris, Rue et Hotel Serpente. MDCCLXXXI avec approvation & privilege du Roi.

The unusual pagination is necessary because each verse is shown in Latin on the verso and a lengthy descriptive translation/narrative in French on the recto.
At some point in its life the book has got wet and there are water stains on the last 50 or so pages. Fortunately this does nothing to detract from the book's appeal. The paper quality is very good and clearly long lasting, with very high rag content, and there is only very light tanning and foxing to the pages.

A wonderful and rare book. Its pages are unmarked except for owner signatures on frontispiece, penned long long ago.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
