Sketches of Old Times And Distant Places

£24.99

Product description

John Murray, London, 1875. Cloth Hardback. Book Condition: Near Good. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. BOOK DESCRIPTION : Rare 1875, 1st Edition blue cloth hardback; 296 pages; near Good. As Vicar of Kensington and Archdeacon of Middlesex, John Sinclair (1797-1875) had the good opportunity to make acquaintance with some remarkable people during his lifetime, some famous (like Sir Walter Scott and David Hume), and others lesser known to the wider public. The sketches that make up this book are taken from the dairies and memoranda that Sinclair accumulated over a span of 40 years. The selection is written in Sinclair's sprightly style of prose, and presents a vivid narrative of those characters and events which made a lasting impression on the author, and also enlightened him to the diversity of human character. BOOK CONDITION : near Good : bumping and slight fraying to cloth at lower foot; slight denting of corner tips of covers; shelfwear to cloth along edge corners; otherwise cloth with only slight rubbing; gilding at spine very legible and fairly bright; odd speck of foxing to preliminary and last couple of pages; pencil inscription to ffep; inside pages mildly toned but in good shape; binding a little shaken but nothing loose and everything holding together.
