A second edition, inscribed copy of this beautifully produced and scarce book published by Emily Faithfull, founder of the Victoria Press (established to provide paid work for women) and Printe and Publisher in Ordinary to Her Majesty [Queen Victoria]. The 29 chromolithograph plates were designed by Emily's sister Esther and printed by M. & N. Hanhart.
Dark blue cloth, bevelled edges worn, spine ends ragged with small losses and spine side splits. Gilt decorative titles and borders to front still bright. Aeg. Inner hinges split, ffep+title page and dedication page detached. Eps brown, ffep edges worn, inscription clear but ink colour similar to page. Scattered foxing, a few small marks but plates well preserved. Unpaginated: , 29 plates printed on 1 side only, ; title page printed in red.
Inscribed on ffep "Florence Marryat From the Author October 1877". Florence Marryat (1833-1899, daughter of Captain Frederick Maryatt) was a prolific author of "sensation fiction", stage performer and family friend - both she and Emily visited and lectured in the United States, and lived independent, unconventional and at times scandalous lives.
