The Art Journal New Series Volume 1 I862

£25.00

Product description

This is a large volume which consists of two parts. The first is Volume 1 of the New Series of the Art-Journal. It is printed in three columns with a linear border. There are a considerable number of unrelated articles - Salopian China, The Turner Gallery, The Exhibition of the Society of British Artists - and there are many steel engravings providing illustrations. This first part runs to 244 pages. The remaining 208 pages are the catalogue of the 1862 International Exhibition. This consists of a very large number of individual items, everything from furniture to decoration, and here the illustrations are copious and informative.
James S Virtue hardback with no DJ. It is bound in half leather with marbled paper on the remainder of the boards. The spine cover is in poor conditions with the rear hinge externally gaping at top and bottom and the front one being not much better. There is edge and corner wear to the boards. Owner's name (dated 1879) on the ffep. Some of the full page engravings have a protective sheet but not the frontispiece.

It is a substantial book which will incur postal costs. In view of its sorry condition it has been very conservatively priced. The catalogue illustrations are a fine presentation of mid-Victorian taste.
