This is the 1896, second edition of a work first published in 1885, published by Taylor Brothers. The author extended and updated it for this publication in 1896. It includes 10 photographic plates at the rear of the book, 9 in colour there also some line drawings. Includes a full glossary, explanations of geographic areas, distribution tables, and index.

Contains figures and distributions of every species, an account of their habits and localities, hints on preserving and arranging. The names and descriptions of all the varieties and synoptical tables showing the differences of species hard to identify.

There is an inscription on the half-title page reading: 'Jessie M Blundell, January 1907'.
There is some wear and discolouration fading to the cover. There are splits along the hinges of end-papers (see photo 6), but the binding is still secure. Internal pages are in a good clean condition.
