John Holt (1841 - 1915) was a business man and trader who, with his brothers, founded a company which pioneered business in West Africa during the latter part of the 19th Century. A blunt speaking man, he attracted the approbium of the British establishment by his opposition to the activities of Leopold of Belgium and others in the Congo. The schooner Maria, was the company's first vessel, trading on the West African coast between 1868 and 1877. Un-numbered volume of a limited edition of 300 published in 1948. Edited by Cecil R. Holt. Used hardback in good condition. No d/j. Red cloth boards with leather covered spine. Gilt tile and decoration to spine. Slight bumping to corners of boards. Scuff to spine. Bump at bottom of rear board, carried over to the front board, slightly. Fading and marking to rear board. Slight spotting to edges of text block. Internally clean and bright with sound binding. Tipped in: compliments slip from John Holt and Co (Liverpool) Ltd., the company that originated from Holt's business.
