The Diseases of the Heart and the Aorta

£450.00

Product description

Apparent First Edition published in 1854 by Hodges and Smith, Dublin.

An uncommon and scarce Dublin edition of this renowned work by William Stokes in its original brown cloth covers. Includes a Table of Cases and Index

William Stokes (1804 – 1878) was an Irish physician, who was Regius Professor of Physic at the University of Dublin. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School with an MD in 1825 later returning the practice in Dublin at Meath Hospital. he went on to create two important works on cardiac and pulmonary diseases: A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest (1837) and The Diseases of the Heart and Aorta (1854); as well as one of the first treatises on the use of the stethoscope. He emphasised the importance of clinical examination in forming diagnoses, and of ward-based learning for students of medicine.

In pretty good condition.

The original boards are lightly marked and have some shelf-wear and bumped corners. The spine is sun-faded and worn at the top and bottom with some fraying. There is a split along the rear of the spine where it joins the back board, about 10-12cm in length. A gift inscription, dated 1946 is written on the front free end paper, and appears to be given as a gift to a newly qualified doctor at the time. Heavy foxing on the front and rear end papers. The spine cover has become detached at the rear of the book (see image 5), although remains attached to the body of the book by the front end-paper.

The text pages are clean, with very little foxing and are free from annotations.
