£95.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

42nd edition published 1891 by Rutten & Loening: Frankfort on the Main. Literarische Anstalt. Copyright edition. London, at the Agencies of the German Literary Society. Myers cover. Translated into English from the German by (possibly) Alexander Platt. First published in Germany in 1845.

Original pictorial boards, titles to front board in black lettering. Red binding of the spine and corners of the cover. Colour illustrations throughout. Covers are much darkened and somewhat scuffed. Foxing to inside pages. Binding is damaged & loose near the back of the book but all 24 pages are present.

This is a highly collectable 19th century edition of Hoffmann's classic work for children that includes 'The Story of Cruel Frederick' ; 'Harriet and the Matches'; 'Fidgety Philip' and 'Johnny Head-in-Air'. If you think we wrap our children in cotton wool today, you may relish the stories of 'shock headed' Strewwelpeter where the gruesome consequences of children's actions are played out in graphic detail. Just the thing to give your (grand)children nightmares!
