The Flower Grower's Guide

£350.00

Product description

This book is in six divisions that are published in three volumes. All volumes are the same size with the same design, both inside and outside of the books. The books have dark red leather boards and spine. The front shows the book title in a floral design together with the author's name. These are embossed in the leather and use gilt for the words and part of the floral design. The floral design also uses black colouring. There is also a gilt and black line running around the edges of the front cover, boxing-in the book title and author's name. The spine has the same embossed design as the front cover with the book title and author's and publisher's names written in gilt. Floral designs in gilt and black are also shown on the spine. The rear cover has an imprint of the publisher's logo in the red leather with no additional colour. The rear cover of Volume II has a minor dent in the board that has not penetrated the leather covering. The books show some signs of bumping to the corners and also some shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spine. The hinges are in good condition with endpapers designed on yellow-green floral paper. The pages are well cut including the tissue paper that protects the chromolithographed flower pages. The only exception is the tissue paper following page 152 in Volume II where the bottom edge is protruding and worn. The edges of the pages in all three volumes are finished in gilt which show no signs of discolouration. Some pages are showing signs of foxing as are some of the edges of the tissue paper and the edges of the chromolithographed flower pages. In the three volumes there are a total of 46 chromolithographed flower pictures. In addition there are in excess of 100 black and white engraved pictures of flowers and plants. All art work for the books has been created by Miss Gertrude Hamilton and Miss Marie Low, with assistance from three other named artists. As previously mentioned, tissue paper has been used to protect the colour flower pages. Apart from some foxing many of the pages have crease marks where the paper has been folded. A few pages show damage by tearing.
