The Household Physician

£25.00

Product description

This is something of an oddity!. M'Gregor published a multivolume book on self help medicine in the late nineteenth century and they have been extensively reissued in a variety of forms. This is entitled Div III and it contains pp 561 - 832. However the book starts in mid sentence dealing with Bread. Similarly it ends in mid sentence in the section dealing with Drugs which act on the Heart and Blood-vessels. The intervening 470 pages cover a large number of topics; the first part is nominally about Hygiene and deals with everything from Sanitary plumbing, food constituents, ventilation and exercises. The next part is entitled Medicines \and the purposes for which they are employed. The volume continues with several pages of advertisements for Blackie's other text books. The text is in two columns and there are several illustrations - of plants, of exercises and of lavatories.

Blackie hardback with no DJ. The boards are covered in brown cloth with an embossed decoration on the front with lettering and gilt lettering to spine. There is considerable wear to the top and bottom of the spine cover. The edges and corners of the boards are also somewhat worn. The end pages are in undecorated black. The binding is good and there are no marks..

Clearly a fairly arbitrary extract from a larger text but professionally bound. Something of an enigma.
