The Ingoldsby Legends 2 volume set.

£15.99

Product description

Sub title "Myth and Marvels" edited with notes introductory and illustrative by R H Barham.
A pair of books published respectively in 1870 and 1876 by Bentley. They are a compendium of the numerous articles and poems which Richard Barham had submitted to Bentleys Miscellany between 1837 - 47. They were very popular in their day - hence the collection - although now of antiquarian interest. There are copious monochrome illustrations by Cruikshank, Leech, Gilks, Buss, and Barham himself. Perhaps the most famous of the contents was the first appearance of "The Jackdaw of Rheims" within the Miscellany's pages.

Bently hardback. Full leather binding with gild patterning of the edges and borders. I have to say that the condition is deplorable In good condition these volumes are priced at over £100 but our much more modest figure is because the boards are separated from the text and the spine covers essentially completely missing. The text block has marbled end papers and all the edges are marbled also. There are no marks and the block itself is firmly bound. Volume 1 has 467 pages and 2 428 pages.

They seem far too good for the recycling bin, but they do need a great deal of TLC.
