Containing Spelling, Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, in an Easier Way Than Any Yet Published. There are a host of other contents directed to the education of a young man wanting to make a career in business. It is very much directed to the practical, how to measure, how to assess the work of various tradesmen, book keeping, business letters. There is an addition of the "Family's Best Companion", a short section on marking linen and concocting some simple medicines. The title page says there is also "A Compendium of The Sciences of Geography and Astronomy", but rather than a compendium there are two chapters in the text on these subjects. Some editions have a section for Gentlemen and Farmers but this is not present in this edition
Between its known first edition in 1727 and 1800 there were many editions and the run was continued with some American versions. They varied widely in size and content.
Publisher W Strahan et al in London. Ours is the 24th edition. Hardback. The boards have been roughly and crudely held together with some plastic tape (although 4 band can be felt though this on the spine). The boards are leather covered with severe wear to corners and edges. There are two front end papers both detached which bear owner's names. The text block is surprisingly good for its age. There is a fold out diagram which has a horizontal tear of its flap, a tear to page 31, and some focal damp stains. Generalised tanning with no additional marks.
A survivor - just - but in sore need of some TLC
