The National Comprehensive Family Bible

£50.00

Product description

Full title: "The Holy Bible with the Commentaries of Scott and Henry, and containing also many thousand critical and explanatory notes, selected from the great standard authors of Europe and America."

Very large heavy item with substantial leather boards and clasps. Both boards are heavily worn and detached from the binding. The front board has come off along with the first two pages, the rear board is separated at the pastedown but in the process the last few pages are torn, probably because of a shoddy repair with gaffer tape. A similar attempt has been made to repair the front board. The front board is heavily embossed leather with a sunken section that contains the title in gilt. There are brass reinforcements to the outer corners with pegs for the matching clasps on the rear, however the bottom clasp is missing. The rear board is quite similar without the title. The spine, which is quite worn, has 6 raised bands and much embossing has the title in gilt text. The binding of the rest of the text block is sound. All page ends are gilt.

The protective tissue for the frontispiece is present but probably became detached when the front board came off. The first title page is heavily decorated, mainly in red and yellow. There is an orange ribbon used as a place marker, not sure if it is part of the original book or not, but it is not connected to the binding.

The first 3 pages of the family history section have been filled in, the first date being 1885.
