The New British Traveller, or a complete...Great Britain and Ireland, The National Omnibus and General Advertiser

£750.00

Product description

Two titles bound together at a later date.
The first is The New British Traveler, or a complete modern universal display of Great Britain and Ireland printed for Alex Hogg at the Kings Arms, 16 Paternoster Row, undated but believed to be 1781.
The other is a set of weekly publication from 1831-1833 entitled The National Omnibus and General Advertiser and subtitled A journal of literature, science, music, theatricals and fine arts. Each consists of about 6 sheets with adverts, reviews of books poems and articles printed in a 3 column format. There are a few small illustrations. 67 issues are present being # 14 dated 30 Sept 1831 to # 80 from 4th Jan 1833 (dated in error 4 Jan 1832). The year 1832 is complete.

The the British Traveler is a work of 520pp and is extensively illustrated with upwards of 150 engravings of famous houses of the day, views of towns, county maps and prominent persons. As stated the book has been rebound probably around 1833. The current binding is poor with the front board detached and spine loose. The rear board is badly scuffed and damaged around the edges and is nearly detached. The British Traveler frontispiece has a tear across most of it's width which has a good quality repair probably done at the time of the rebind. Similar damage and repair applies to the title page. Internally there is age related browning and spotting but many of the illustrations are free of these marks. Generally the internals are very good for a book of this age. No original end papers are present.
The National Omnibus copies are generally free of damage.
