The New Forest: Its History and Scenery.

£120.00

Product description

This is the second edition of the most successful book by John Wise. He was a peripatetic naturalist, writer and polemicist who lived for a while within the New Forest. He took his illustrator, Walter Crane, around the forest in order to select the best scenes for illustration.

Smith, Elder and Co hardback with no DJ. The green cloth covered boards are bevelled with an embossed design on front and back and a central gilt decoration on the front, gilt decoration and lettering to spine. There is minimal wear to corners of the boards and to the top and bottom of the spine cover. The front hinge is slightly sprung but entirely functional. Grey black end papers. On the front end papers is an owner's name and the date Xmas 1874. We are told that there are 63 illustrations and two maps. In fact one of the maps is an inset on page 149. The other is a full fold out map of the forest which is here present and intact (although a little foxed). There are four appendices - Glossary of Provincialisms/ List of flowering plants/ List of the birds/ List of the Lepidoptera.

A good example of a rare book.
