The Nude

£14.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

2010. Art historian, author and presenter of the hugely influential series Civilisation, Kenneth Clark possessed a profound knowledge and appreciation of art, and the ability to communicate it. The Nude is considered his best book. In this classic work he shows how, through the centuries, the depiction of the human body has remained the pinnacle of Western art. Clark was the first art historian to consider the distinction between the 'naked' and the 'nude'. In his now-famous definition, the former implies a huddled and defenceless body, while the latter is a balanced and confident form that has been, for centuries, of central importance in Western art. The 'nude' is, he explains, not just a subject but an art form, invented by the greeks in the 5th century BC, 'just as opera is an art form invented in 17th-century italy'. It shows the human body as a serious subject of contemplation: often idealised, yet real, and arousing feelings varying from desire to pathos and awe. 180 colour and black & white plates.
Book and slip case are still in their cellophane wrapping. As new.

Oxfam Books & Music Olney

Welcome to Oxfam Books And Music Olney, situated just off the market square in Stanley Court opposite the Co-Op. Come and browse our extensive selection of books, music, DVDs, computer games and cards. In our shop you can discover a great range of material from the latest modern fiction to classic literature and vintage LPs. We are always happy to receive your donations of books or music, and you can choose to Gift Aid them to Oxfam. We might also be able to collect particularly large donations - just ask. We are always interested in hearing from people who wish to volunteer with us. Just pop in to collect an application form.

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
