The Old Woman and her Pig

£50.00

Product description

This is a child's story retold innumerable times over the years and in a large number of different publications. Our copy has the frontispiece and illustration on the front cover of the Old Lady finding the "silver penny" The illustrations are by A Chasemore but there is no author identified. Neither is a year of publication but there is a label on the inside of the front cover recording that the book was given as a prize for attending punctually and this is dated 1891. It is thought that this is the 1888 edition. It is labelled "the Old Corner" on the outside of the front cover.
The condition is pretty awful. The text block is held together with four staples which have local rusting without staining of the adjacent page. There are advertisements on the inside of both boards and the first and last pages of the text block are also advertisements. The frontispiece is in colour. The remaining illustrations are in black and white. There is a single stamp dated September 1891 and attesting that this was an "attendance prize" of the London School Board. The boards are held together with a cloth spine and are but tenuously attached to the text block. The cloth is itself extensively worn and partly deficient although just about functioning. The edges and corners of the boards show considerable wear.

In good condition this little book commands quite a high price, but there is no question of our book being other than a sorry example. But it is an early example of a tale which has persisted in a variety of forms over the intervening 125 years.
