The Operations of Surgery - W.H.A. Jacobson
J&A Churchill, London. 1889. pp1136 plus publisher's catalogue to rear.
Dark red boards, engraved at edges and without titles. One inch crack towards bottom of front hinge, leaving the binding visible. Spine with gold gilt titles and modest decoration to head and tail. Front board has two defects, as though subjected to great strain. Small tear toward centre of spine.
The volume is rather grubby but all bindings have survived well for 126 years with weight they support (around 2 Kg).
Inside, the paste down and end papers are water stained. Owner inscribed paste down: "RS Fowler, Jan 7 1890" and again on end paper. Internal hinges cracked with binding plainly visible in places.
Author inscribed (printed) frontispiece: "To three old friends, Arthur Edward Durham, James Frederic Goodhart, Edwin Climson Greenwood, I dedicate this book as some slight token of my gratitude and affectionate respect."
Pages yellowed but of good quality. Block edges are dirty and tanned.
A magnificent and extremely rare volume of surgical techniques: "The operations of surgery, intended especially for the use of those recently appointed on a hospital staff, and for those preparing for the higher examinations." with ninety-nine distressing line illustrations and engravings.
This is an important historical work that was of great practical application in its day.
