The Pocket Volume Shakespeare - Boxed Set

£95.00

Product description

The title of the boxed set is "The Pocket Volume Shakespeare", whereas the individual volumes are named "The Plays of William Shakespeare". It was published by George Bell and Sons in 1894.

This is a very unusual item in that the contents on the box lid identify it as consisting of 13 volumes but there are only 12 present, volume 11 is missing; the puzzle is that there is no space in the box for the missing volume as you can see from the images. After much research we have been unable to locate any other examples of this edition so can throw no light on this enigma.

The box is a sturdy construction of thick board covered in red cloth, which is now quite faded, stained and marked. The exterior cloth is torn at the lid hinge, but it is still held together by the internal hinge. The author's name "Shakespeare" is embossed on the lid in highly decorated text and was once coloured in gilt, but it is now quite dull.

There is a red ribbon in the box that is designed to make extracting individual volumes easier.

Each volume is of a small format pocket book size, 132 x 183 x 14 mm approx. They have paper covered boards where the paper is printed with a pattern to resemble cloth. The top page edges have a gilt finish. The books are all in very good condition and show little evidence of use. The bindings are still tight with few examples of the book falling open at a particular page.
