The Preceptor - First Volume - 1st Edition

£500.00

Product description

First edition of the First Volume of The Preceptor, containing a General Course of Education, illustrated with maps and useful cuts.

Published for Robert Dodsley at Tully's Head in Pall Mall, London, in 1748.

Robert Dodsley was a poet, playwright and writer, who became one of the foremost publishers of his day. He published many works by Dr Samuel Johnson, and helped to finance and print Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language.

This first edition includes a dedication to Prince George and a Preface by Samuel Johnson. Includes an inscription and a book plate (see photo).

In fair condition for a book of its age, with the cover being darkened and discoloured, as well as edge worn, and the spine is slightly torn down the front of the book, although the binding is good and intact. There is some foxing, commensurate with the age of the book. One of the unfolding plates is slightly torn (please see photo).

An extremely rare and sought-after work.
