Written by Henry Van Dyke, and published in 1895 by Harper & Brothers Publishers, so presumed first edition, the story of Artaban, who, like the other Magi sees signs in the heavens proclaiming that a King had been born among the Jews and sets out to see the newborn ruler, carrying treasures to give as gifts to the child. However, he stops along the way to help a dying man, misses the caravan of the three wise men, He arrives in Bethlehem too late to see the child, but saves the life of a child. He searches for many years performing acts of charity, and arrives in Jerusalem just in time for the crucifixion of Jesus.

In good used condition, bound in red cloth, with some fading to spine and scuffing. Paper paste down illustration to front cover, gold lettering. Rough cut pages, block is tight. Owner's names on free end paper.
