The Surrey Hills

£14.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

1st edition. Condition fair. Green cover with gold embossed lettering on spine and front. Very slight wear to edges of cover and spine. Webbing loose in two places. Discolouring inside back and front cover. Foxing to early pages. Beautifully illustrated with 28 plates by Elliott Seabrooke, including 12 in collotype, all in excellent condition. This title's current cultural interest is demonstrated by its recent reprinting in the United States (Forgotten Books, 2015) and references in ' William Cobbett, Romanticism and the Enlightenment: Contexts and Legacy' (Routledge, 2016). The latter makes mention of Green's reputation for having an intimate knowledge of rural life in the early 20th century, on which he wrote a series of books, including 'The Surrey Hills'. Green lived in Surrey, Cobbett's birthplace, and closely identified with the earlier author, from whose 'Rural Rides' he frequently quoted. Rather than sentimentalising country life, Green set about exposing the harsh social and economic conditions of rural workers.
