The Whole Duty of Man or The Christian's Companion

£24.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The title page reads - "The Whole Duty of Man; or, the Christian's Companion. Containing the most Important Truths of our Holy Religion: With the various duties which he owes to God, - to his neighbour, - and to himself. To which are added Devout Meditations on several Divine Subjects; and Forms of Prayer properly adapted for the various circumstances of life. Designed for the use of Families by the Rev. Charles Atmore. In the preface the editor - who I take to be Altmore - says that much of the work is culled from Venn's Complete Duty of Man" and from "Bennet's Christian Oratory." There was a volume of this name widely circulated in the years following 1648 and attributed to Allestree. This is the third edition of this particular collection and while the Editor's comments are dated 1811 the date of publication is given as 1814 by Nuttall and Fisher in Liverpool and 1822 by Henry Fisher in London. The latter seems the more likely given the London imprint on the title page.
There are numerous steel engravings by WW Craig (the one opposite page 378 being only tenuously attached to the binding). It concludes with some guidance for the reading of the Holy Scriptures and with a brief index.

Fisher hardback. Whole leather binding but with to lower fifth of the spine cover and cover of the lower front hinge missing. Five raised bands on spine. Embossed pattern around edge of front and rear boards. Marbled end pages. Front internal hinge exposed but functional. Considerable damp staining particularly of the illustrations although the text seems remarkably spared. No annotations or other marks.

A vade mecum of devotional exercises.
