The Works of Shakespere (sic) with notes: Imperial edition Vols 1 &2

£130.00

Product description

A two-volume set published circa 1870s by Virtue & Co. With notes by Charles Knight. Both volumes are bound in red leather over wonderful marbled boards, with gilt titles to spine: all page edges are gilt. Front covers decorated with border motifs and a gilt image of a half-timbered house in the middle, with the words 'The Imperial Shakespere'. Evidence of some amateurish repairs to the binding of a few loose pages in volume 1. Lettering on the spines have faded. Inside pages are slightly age-darkened. "Illustrated on steel" with many black and white engravings.

Volume I contains the Comedies, the Histories up to and including King Richard III. Volume II contains the rest of the Histories, The Tragedies, Poems, Plays ascribed to Shakespeare, indices, Knight's biography. Knight's notes go before and after the various works.

An impressive pair of books, in terms of size and weight but mainly for their lavish and expensive appearance.

A collector's item for lovers of the bard.
