Through the Ranks to a Commission

£120.00

Product description

An 1881 volume. The front free end page has a handwritten letter glued to it which reads " Dear Sir Stafford Northcote, I have ventured to send you a copy of a little book I have published lately- ' Through the Ranks to a Commission'- Sir John Walrond told me he thought I might do so- and I seized the idea willingly enough, in memory of the kind interest you showed for the experiment I made, and which is now described in the book mentioned. I hope it may ( through a kind indulgence ) throw a pleasenter light on some Army manners and customs, for the general public. yours sincerely" The volume also has a Publishers Advertisement which notes " As this Book bears no writer's name, the Publishers feel bound to state that they have seen documents and letters from well- known persons, which are more than enough to guarentee the genuiness of the narrative."

Both the letter and a plate are signed. The author gives his reasons for not publishing his name in the preface. His story starts in 1873 and finishes sixteen months later. The fourteen chapters cover his service.

The book has no dust jacket. The red boards are light damaged, rather grubby and the front board has stains. The head and tail of the spine have softened. There is some evidence of foxing and of the pages starting to detach from the hinge. The volume is also cocked.
