About this item

Publisher: Macmillan and Co., 1883. Written by Thomas Hughes, Tom Brown at Oxford is a sequel to the better-known Tom Brown's Schooldays. The book was out of print for many years in the UK. Redish brown cloth boards with embossed and gilt detailing on the cover and spine, the title is on the spine in gilt lettering. No dustcover. The outside of the book has suffered some obvious shelf ware, with dented corners, worn edges, damage to the top and bottom of the spine, and some marking to the cover. There are also some air bubbles in the cover. The pages are rough cut, so the outside edges of them are visibly aged and discoloured. Inside, the pages are generally clean, with some foxing, discolouration around the edges of the pages, and some very occasional marking, but the book is always clear enough to read. The binding is somewhat loose, with a detached page half way through, the last page also torn. The text is accompanied by black and white illustrated plates, which are in much the same condition as the text, with some foxing and slightly worn edges. While it is in quite a worn condition a hardback copy of the book is still somewhat unusual, and the text and illustrations are still readable.
