Vaccari's Standard English-Japanese Dictionary

£250.00

Product description

Vaccari's Standard English-Japanese Dictionary

First edition 1967 - Vaccari's Language Institute (Tokyo) and by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Company (London).
Printed in Japan by Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd.
pp2319 plus a few dozen pages of addenda and marketing.

This colossal volume (approx 4Kg) is in quarter bound red cloth boards with gilt titles and very robust tan leather trim and spine. Grey marbled effect page edges with letter guides in black and gilt leather.

The spine is beautiful, with Japanese and English text and (naturally) the publishers' rising sun image, all engraved into the mellow tan leather.
Front paste down has a glued in newspaper article about the passing in 1980 of Oreste Vaccari, a highly respected publisher and tutor of the Japanese language.

It is unfortunate that the first signature has come free of the volume. This includes a signed dedication by the authors on the ffep:
"To Mr BJ Remmelts, with the compliments of the authors, Oreste and Elisa Vaccari. Tokyo, August 31st 1974" as well as the title pages, preface and other front matter. However these are intact as a section and expert repair may thus be an option.
The final signature is frayed but still attached to the inner binding; again, this may be repairable.
The remainder of the volume is in very good condition and tightly bound to spine.

Overall a little used volume in very good condition. The defects described above appear to have been caused not by neglect but by its sheer bulk when being handled. This unabridged rare and beautiful first edition would be of great interest to the connoisseur of Japanese language. Highly recommended.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
